There are definitely ways to make this trip even cheaper if needed, but for a full week on the road, this felt like a great balance between saving money and still enjoying the experience. For a full week of travel, food, gas, and accommodations — this felt like a win.

How We Saved Money on This Trip

These were the biggest budget-savers:

  • Camped several nights instead of staying in hotels

  • Cooked most breakfasts, lunches, and dinners

  • Used GasBuddy + Costco gas

  • America the Beautiful Pass – $80 annually

    • Most national parks charge around $30–$35 per vehicle for entrance, so this pass paid for itself quickly. It’s valid for an entire year, making it a no-brainer if you plan on visiting multiple parks or taking another road trip.

  • McDonald’s was a frequent on the road meal (the app + free rewards really add up)

  • Focused on free activities like hiking and scenic drives

  • Used a credit card with annual hotel credits and rewards - maximize savings

Where We Stayed (Hotels / Campgrounds)

1. National Park Campgrounds

Cost: $20–$30 per night

Why we chose it: Close to trails + cheapest option

Best for: Budget travelers and nature lovers

Would I stay again? Absolutely

2. Budget Hotel

Cost: $100 per night

Why we chose it: Needed a reset day (shower + bed)

Best for: Long driving days or when campsites aren’t available

Would I stay again? Yes—but only for one night max

How to Make a 7-Day CA Road Trip Even Cheaper

If you’re on a tighter budget, here are a few easy ways to cut costs:

  • Camp every night instead of staying in hotels

  • Split costs with 3–4 people instead of two

  • Use reward points or hotel credits

  • Bring food for the first 2–3 days to avoid eating out early

Final Verdict

This budget works best if you’re okay with camping, cooking most meals, and prioritizing experiences. A 7-day California road trip doesn’t have to be expensive. With a little planning and flexibility, it’s completely possible to explore, eat well, and stay comfortable for around $700 per person.
